Bus Policy

The Pavilion Central Board of Education, at its regular meeting on September 14, 1988, made clarifications regarding the intent and procedures concerning the new Bus Transportation Policy.

The policy itself was formulated in response to the great number of irregular pick-up and drop-off points being requested, as well as the frequent changes made in these requests. There was concern raised over the possibility of some bus routes becoming overcrowded with no advance time to prepare adjustments. In several instances, there were conflicting parental requests for where to transport a child - more than one note and/or telephone requests made after a note was already forwarded to school or the bus driver. Children were verbally passing along bus change requests with no written permission from a parent. There was a growing concern here at school that children could inadvertently be dropped off at an incorrect location and/or be missed at a morning pick-up point. When multiple changes are being made, it is impossible for the bus drivers to become familiar with all the children or to be able to predict all the possible circumstances surrounding a child’s pick-up or return route.

In an effort to rectify these concerns, the needs of some parents to have children picked up or returned at locations different than home were also recognized. We realize that some flexibility must be allowed, but that controls still do need to be maintained over the transportation situation. Therefore, the policy has been clarified in the following manner:

Regarding morning pick-ups:

A regular pick-up point for each child, whether at home, at a babysitter’s or at a relative’s home, must be identified. This regular pick-up site will then determine on what bus route the child is placed. Alternate pick-up points will be approved as long as these points are on the same bus route. A student will not be granted permission to change to another bus route for morning pick-up purposes.

Regarding afternoon returns:

A regular return point for each child, whether at home, a babysitter’s, or a relative’s home, must be identified. This return site will determine on what bus route the child is placed. Alternate return points will be approved as long as these points are on the same bus route. A student will not be granted permission to change to another bus route for afternoon return purposes.
