February 12 2018 Minutes

The regular meeting of the Pavilion Central School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:03 PM by Board President Marirose Ethington in the high school conference room.

 

Board members present:  Marirose Ethington, Jeff Finch, Rebecca (Becky) Dziekan, and Margaret (Peg) Gaston, Callin Ayers-Tillotson

 

Board members absent: John Bannister and Kevin Stefan

 

Others present:  Kenneth Ellison, Sheila Eigenbrod, Stacey Tallon, Jon Wilson, Donald Childs, and Mary Jo Pahl

APPROVE AGENDA:

  1. Outdoor Classroom Donation:

    **        Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Jeff Finch to approve acceptance of cash contributions from Rodney and Loraine West and others, in memory of Richard and Audrey McNulty, to be used for expenses related to the District’s Outdoor Classroom Program; carried unanimously (5 votes).  

     

  2. Appointments:

    **       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Callin Ayers-Tillotson to appoint John Cianfrini to the position of Modified Tennis Coach for the 2017-2018 school year at the contracted base salary amount of $1,950.00; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Becky Dziekan to appoint Kari Piazza to the position of long-term substitute 4th grade teacher effective 1/30/18 at the prorated starting salary for a new teacher with a bachelor’s degree of $183.75 per day; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to appoint Melissa Staba-Busch to the position of long-term substitute Literacy Specialist teacher effective 2/5/18 at the prorated starting salary for a new teacher with a master’s degree of $186.25 per day; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to approve the one substitute teaching application as presented for Lyndsay Baker; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Callin Ayers-Tillotson to appoint Erica Miller to the position of Long-Term Substitute School Psychologist at the rate of pay of $40.00 per hour; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Callin Ayers-Tillotson to appoint Lois Nicholson and Cheryl McAllister to the position of substitute food service helper at minimum wage; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **       Moved by Callin Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Becky Dziekan to appoint Jessica Hempel to the position of Alternate CSE Chair while Kim Szczesny is on maternity leave; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

  3. Maternity Leave:

    **       Moved by Callin Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Jeff Finch to approve the request for maternity leave as submitted for Caylin DePuy to begin on or about May 14, 2018; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

  4. Approve Genesee County Real Property recommendation for refund of taxes:

    **       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Jeff Finch to approve the recommended refund in the amount of $199.18 due to an agricultural land exemption that was calculated incorrectly by Genesee County; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

  5. Executive Budget:

    **        Mr. Ellison presented the executive budget proposal issued by Governor Cuomo.  Preliminary  figures show an $80,000 dollar increase in state aid for the 2018-2019 budget year.

    Mr. Ellison also summarized highlights from recent meetings with local legislators. Our representatives are aligned in opposition to the Governor's proposal to restrict expense-based aids in the budget. In addition, they will advocate for additional foundation aid in the final budget. No action required.

  1. Monday, February 26, 2018, March 12 and 26, 2018 BOE meeting dates

     

    **        Mr. Finch presented the Board with a quick AG advisory board update, with Dr. Eigenbrod contributing information on the high tunnel and grants to be used for it.  They both answered questions asked and the Board thanked them for the information.  

     

    **        Mr. Wilson spoke to the Board to let them know his appreciation for the Elementary teachers and all of the hard work they have been doing in regards to the curriculum in that building.    

     

    **        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to enter executive session at 7:49 PM; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

    **        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to return to regular session at 8:08 PM; carried unanimously (5 votes).

     

     

     

     

    1. Resignation and retirement – Orr:

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Peg Gaston to approve the Retirement of Sharon Orr pursuant to agreement dated 1/26/18; carried unanimously (5 votes).
