Regular Board of Education Meeting – April 8, 2019

 

The regular meeting of the Pavilion Central School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:00 PM by Board President Marirose Ethington in the Board of Education conference room.

 

Board members present:  Marirose Ethington, Jeffrey Finch, Callin (Cal) Ayers-Tillotson, Margaret (Peg) Gaston, Chris Jeffres, Rebecca (Becky) Dziekan and Kevin Stefan

 

Board members absent:

 

Others present:  Kenneth Ellison, Sheila Eigenbrod, Charles Martelle, Stacey Tallon, Jon Wilson, Donald Childs and Mary Jo Pahl

 

Others Absent:

 

Visitors: Four (4) per sign in log

 

**        Jeff Finch led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

APPROVE AGENDA:

 

**        Moved by Becky Dziekan; seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson to approve agenda with additions; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

CONSENT GROUPING:

 

**        Moved by Kevin Stefan, seconded by Chris Jeffres to approve all items in the consent grouping –BOE minutes from 3/25/19; Sub CSE minutes from 3/27/19; CPSE minutes from 3/29/18; Appropriation and Budget Status Reports for A, C & F funds as of February 2019 and Treasurer’s Reports as of February 2019; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

BUSINESS:

 

1.                Department Head Reports:

**       Katie Staub, the ELA Department Head, Jean Bartholomew, the Math Department Head and Ashley McMaster, the District Health Coordinator spoke to the Board regarding their respective department goals, sharing the documents attached to these minutes.  Each answered questions and the Board thanked them for their updates.  No action required.

 

2.                FFA State Convention Approval:

**        Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson to approve the attendance for the FFA students to attend the FFA State Convention in Syracuse to be held May 1, 2019 to May 4, 2019; carried unanimously (7 votes). 

 

3.                Approve Budget Vote Tellers:

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson to appoint Cindy Pilc, Crista Boldt, Tammy Bradley and Deb Davis as tellers for the May 21, 2019 budget/BOE member vote with Mary Jo Pahl acting as head teller; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

4.                Transportation Requests 19-20:

**       Moved by Cal Ayers-Tillotson seconded by Peg Gaston to approve transportation for fourteen (14) students to attend non-public school for the 2019-2020 school year; carried unanimously (7 votes). 

 

5.                Add Memorial Day weekend one (1) extra day (5/24):

**       Moved by Chris Jeffres, seconded by Becky Dziekan to approve the addition of Friday May 24th to the Memorial Day Holiday weekend as per contract; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

6.                May BOE meeting dates 6 and 14:

**       Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to approve the change to the May 2019 BOE meeting dates to be Monday, May 6th and Tuesday May 14th, the date of the annual budget presentation meeting; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

7.                Appointments:

**        Moved by Cal Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Chris Jeffres to appoint Laurie Fischer as a tutor for the 2018-2019 school year upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Cal Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Becky Dziekan to appoint Michele Parker to the position of substitute school nurse as presented; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Chris Jeffres to appoint Jamie Grant to the unpaid position of Intern Principal for the Elementary Summer School program for the 2019-2020 school year; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

8.                Resignations:

**       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Becky Dziekan to accept the letter of resignation submitted by Carol Stoneham from the position of cleaner effective April 19, 2019, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**       Moved by Cal Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Kevin Stefan to accept the letter of resignation submitted by Jacob Clark from the position of 6th Grade Teacher effective June 30, 2019, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

9.                Disposal of Track Mats:

**       Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson to approve the disposal of track mats as presented; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

10.            2019-2020 Budget:

**        Moved by Chris Jeffres, seconded by Becky Dziekan to adopt the 2019-2020 Pavilion Central School District budget in the amount of $17,540,912.00 to be presented to the voters of the district on May 21, 2019; motion carried with Peg Gaston voting no.

**        Sheila Eigenbrod:  Spoke to the Board regarding a pilot program, tentatively called “Your Life” that has been initiated for the High School students to help prepare them for life after school, this program focuses on interviews, loans, credit cards, etc.

 

**        Jon Wilson:  Gave credit to the RTI Committee in the Elementary school for how well they are working together to gather different ideas for the students.

 

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Becky Dziekan to enter executive session at 8:27 PM; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Jeff Finch to return to regular session at 9:00 PM; carried unanimously (7 votes).
